The town of Avon, historically named Kinnakeet, is the largest and busiest town on Hatteras Island. Home to many year-round residents as well as a diverse offering of local businesses including restaurants, grocery stores and retail shops. Avon is the relative hub of the island, yet has only two stoplights in the whole town. It’s here you can shop for all your daily or vacation needs from surf gear to pharmaceuticals, gifts to groceries, and grab a local crabcake sandwich while you are at it. Drop a postcard to relatives at the island’s post office on the way to some of the most perfect beaches you’ll encounter on the island.
